Bible Verse Memorization

One of the best things that a believer could do is take time to memorize Scripture from the Bible. It is not only good to do this because the Holy Scriptures can be recalled during trying moments and thus encourage the soul (Romans 15:4), but also because you never know when you might be asked to give a reason for the hope that is in you (1Peter 3:15). By knowing the Bible in this way you can give people scriptural reasons for your faith in God, which is obviously a good thing because faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God (Romans 10:17). And we most certainly want them to have faith in Jesus Christ, which is all the more reason why we should be sharing the Bible with them; for it has the power to equip us for every good work (2Timothy 3:16-17).

With that said, I would like to provide you with some simple steps that you can take to memorize Scripture more easily.

1. We tend to remember things more easily when we can relate to them. Therefore, it is a good idea to use a Bible translation that best meets your needs in this way. I use the New King James Version, because for me it is easier to memorize scripture that is written in a language that I commonly use.

2. Bible memory verse cards should be used for optimal results. I simply use index cards for this.

Note: It is best to put a scriptural reference on one side and the actual verse on the other side of the card. Thus, you will not only be able to look at the verse and recall the reference, you will also be able to look at the reference and recite the verse. This bible memorization method will prove to work very well for you as it produces great results.

Also, be sure to cut the index cards in half vertically. This will make it more convenient for you to take your Bible memory verse cards with you wherever you go, as they will be small enough to fit in your pocket. Of course, you will also get more cards this way too, which means you will save money.

3. Don't just memorize your scripture verses, be sure to internalize them. In other words, make sure you understand them, as this will not only help you to remember them more easily, it will also make it easier for you to know when and what to apply them to. Some questions that you can ask to do this are:

What is this Bible verse saying? Why is it important? How can I apply it to my life?

4. Be sure to set some time aside each day to review your Bible memory verses (Very Important!).

Incidentally, you are in for a real treat! You see, the more you memorize scripture the easier it will become to make scriptural connections. What I mean by this is that you will discover more and more how the Bible verses that you have memorized compliment other scriptures, and thus you will see that the Bible interprets itself in this way. Indeed, this will work wonderfully in helping you to gain a greater depth of knowledge for understanding God's word.

May the Lord bless you abundantly as you seek first His kingdom and His righteousness by meditating on His word and storing it in your heart (Psalm 119:105).
