The Amplified Bible is the scholarly efforts of a woman who devoted her life to the study of biblical languages, cultural history and archaeological knowledge. Born in 1881 her name was Frances Siewert, Litt. B., B.D., M.A., Litt. D. Until her death in 1967, she was involved in allowing the bible to be expressed in the full body of it's intriguing languages. The Amplified New Testament was first published in 1958 by Zondervan Publishing House. This work of love was followed by a two-volume edition of the Old Testament in 1962 and 1964. Finally, the one-volume Amplified Bible was published in 1965.

What make the Amplified Bible so unique is the way it was translated. To keep everything in a simple format, most bibles, regardless of which manuscript they were translated from, are not translations when you look at them. They are interpretations. Here is why. The Hebrew and Greek languages are amazingly pictorial in their renderings. It is nearly impossible to translate the text word for word. It truly takes a portrait being drawn or you lose some of the strength and most of the beauty. Imagine describing a trip to another world with the word: Interesting. How much would be lost in the expression?

It was considered sacrilegious to "add or take away" from the Scriptures. The early translators did not take into consideration that this lack of scope and depth took away from the bible's vast treasure of expression. The Amplified Bible stresses the multi-layers of shades and shapes to be found in the Hebrew and Greek texts. Of course, this does not replace studying the languages. However, it is as close as most will get. The Amplified Bible is not concern with the amount of words used to show the various shadows and concepts hidden in the textual structure.

Explore the power and freedom of the Amplified Bible. It is sometimes wordy, but that is the benefit. The whole purpose of this extraordinary bible is with you, the reader, in mind. You may never study the actual languages. With the aid of the Amplified Bible a great deal of the job is done for you. Read and enjoy the text like an exegesis expert!
